Summer Food Kickoff to provide healthy meals to children

ATLANTA -- Georgia's Department of Early Child Care and Learning, the Georgia Department of Education and the Georgia Food Bank Association will hold a summer event where Atlanta kids can get a healthy meal.

The 2013 Georgia Summer Food Service Program is set for Saturday, June 18 from 11:00 a.m. - 1:00 p.m. in Grant Park. A spokesman for DECAL said more than 116 program sponsors from across Georgia are expected to serve over 3.5 million meals at over 1,500 sites.

"Providing nutritious summer meals to children who would normally receive free breakfast or lunch during the school year is part of DECAL's commitment to keeping Georgia's children healthy." DECAL Commissioner Bobby Cagle said.

Providing the meals are important to DECAL, as some children in especially low-income areas receive free and low-cost breakfast and lunch from school before class, and do not get them when school is on summer break.

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Bicycle Coalition is hoping to raise money over the summer so that bike lanes can run through Atlanta neighborhoods.

The summer advocacy campaign, Connecting the City will support the addition of bicycle lanes along Peachtree Street, DeKalb Avenue and Lee Street.

According to the ABC, Mayor Reed announced their goal: to be a Top 10 biking city by 2016, including 120 miles of bikeways.

If the bikes become part of a new transportation in mode like the ABC hopes, a bike share program in Atlanta could make getting around easier for commuters.

A Cabbagetown dad and his land shark

A Cabbagetown dad and his land shark

ATLANTA -- Dave Dechant of Cabbagetown is a stay-at-home dad and husband.

When the 43 year old with a degree in writing needed something to do as the kids went to school and his wife to work, Dave taught himself to sculpt.

This is not about clay and wood. Dechant purchased 30,000 lbs. of Georgia granite and has created, with his own hands, a 22-foot long shark with a man inside. The home project has taken him two years. The shark has now been paired down to 10,000 lbs.

Did we mention it sits in his front yard?

We received a call from his neighbor George Berry. The retired sculpting teacher from Kennesaw State University told us his neighbor is astonishing and has done something that needed to be seen.
