*Return of the Parking Lot Scammer(s)*

From time to time we post about a scammer, speaking with what seems to be an island accent, who will disable a target's car and then "fix" the car with the expectation of some money. One of our contacts in Virginia Highland recently received this account from an encounter with such an individual along with some pictures (posted below) of the person allegedly operating this scam.

We believe several different scammers are working the area using this and similar tactics. Should you become a targeted victim call 911 immediately, and then call Midtown Tire (404-874-1112) - they will come fix the car for free. Don't pay the scammer.

DeKalb, Fulton receive grants to fight sexual abuse

ATLANTA -- DeKalb and Fulton counties have been awarded grants for use by law enforcement agencies to combat child sexual abuse and exploitation.

The grants awarded Tuesday are administrated by the U.S. Department of Justice and Office of Community Oriented Policing Services.

Federal officials say DeKalb County will receive $496,793 and the Fulton County District Attorney's Office will receive $352,803. They say Atlanta continues to have a reputation as a center of child prostitution.

Twenty grants totaling $9.2 million are being awarded to agencies across the country.

Feds crack down on prescription drug trafficking

Feds crack down on prescription drug trafficking

ATLANTA -- A federal grand jury in Atlanta has charged a total of 13 defendants from two states with illegally trafficking in oxycodone and other prescription drugs.

The two cases arise out of intensified efforts to address Georgia's growing problem with prescription drug abuse.

"Prescription drug abuse is our nation's fastest-growing segment of illegal drug use, causing significantly more overdose deaths than cocaine, methamphetamine and heroin combined," said United States Attorney Sally Quillian Yates.

In the first incident, 11 Georgia residents were charged with conspiring to forge oxycodone prescriptions and sell the illegally obtained tablets.

Clean Car Campaign, are you a participant?

Clean Car Campaign, are you a participant?

ATLANTA – (Fourth Ward Alliance) Please take a moment to look at the newsletter from the February Public Safety meeting.  Note that 75 percent of crimes in Zone 5 (where we’re located) are due to Larceny from Auto incidents, which means that police officers spend a disproportionate amount of time responding to these incidents.

Widespread participation in APD’s “Clean Car Campaign” (meaning, DO NOT LEAVE ANYTHING IN YOUR VEHICLE!) will have the dual benefit of:

  • reducing crime statistics in our neighborhood
  •  freeing up police officers to respond faster and more effectively to higher priority issues.

So, please spread the word about the importance of the “Clean Car Campaign” to your friends, neighbors and guests – we’ll all benefit together!
