Gato, A Cappella Books celebrate Ga. farms

ATLANTA -- The author of Farm Fresh Georgia will visit Atlanta later this month.

Jodi Helmer exhaustively researched attractions, dining trends and farms throughout the state's six regions -- Appalachian, Atlanta Metro, Blue Ridge, Lower Coastal Plain, Piedmont and Upper Coastal Plain -- to write Farm Fresh Georgia: The Go-To Guide to Great Farmers' Markets, Farm Stands, Farms, U-Picks, Kids' Activities, Lodging, Dining, Dairies, Festivals, Choose-and-Cut Christmas Trees, Vineyards and Wineries, and More.

She will visit the Freedom Farmers' Market at the Carter Center on Saturday, May 31 from 9 a.m. to 1 p.m. Shoppers can meet Helmer at the community table. The Carter Center is located at 453 Freedom Parkway NE.

Seniors line dance during Community Day at the Bowden Senior Multipurpose Facility

Fulton County seniors practiced their line dancing skills during the first Fulton County Senior Multipurpose Facility Community Day celebration.  Community day is an annual event that is held in May of each year at the county’s four senior multipurpose facilities in observance of Older Americans Month. The HJC Bowden Senior Multipurpose facility also offered a tai chi demonstration, face painting for children, a basketball hoop for boys and girls to practice shooting hoops, mini-train rides for families, food and other entertainment.  Additional Community Days for seniors, their friends and families will be held at the following senior multipurpose facilities:

Race this weekend: Ribbon Run

Race this weekend: Ribbon Run

ATLANTA -- The Atlanta Dream Center will hold its second-ever Ribbon Run 5K this weekend.

Money raised by the race will benefit the 150/5 Project, which serves children in need, homeless Atlantans and victims of sex slavery. The center hopes to raise at least $30,000 through the event.

The RIbbon Run will be held Saturday, May 10 in the parking lot in front of the Atlanta Dream Center. Race day registration opens at 8 a.m., and runners will be off at 9 a.m.

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- Fulton County Senior Multipurpose Facilities will host Community Days in May in observance of Older Americans Month 2014.

Community Days are designed for adults and children of all ages and feature games, entertainment, refreshments and information regarding services available for seniors through the Fulton County Office of Aging. Event dates include the following:

Fulton County celebrates 100 years of Cooperative Extension

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- On Tuesday, Apr. 29, residents can join Fulton County Cooperative Extension as they celebrate 100 years of life-long learning made possible by the signing of the Smith-Lever Act of 1914, which established the national agency.

The event will be held from 10 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Fulton County Government Center located at 141 Pryor Street, SE in Downtown Atlanta.

The public event at the Fulton County Government Center will feature special guest speakers, live music, the nationally recognized Fulton Fresh Mobile Farmer’s Market and a “butterfly release” to signify 100 years of pollinating information into the lives of Fulton County residents.

Ga. Connections Academy accepting students for 2014-15 school year

(WXIA) -- A few seats are still available at Georgia Connections Academy for the 2014-15 school year.

Georgia Connections Academy is a virtual K-12 public school that allows students to learn at their own pace. It is fully accredited and open to all school-age Georgia children.

"We are enrolling 1,000 additional students across all grade levels for the coming academic year," lead principal Heather Robinson said in a release. "We have a waiting list as we open enrollment, so we encourage parents to get their applications in now."

Georgia Connections Academy will hold a number of information sessions across the state for parents who want to know more. Additional enrollment information is available at connectionsacademy.com/georgia-virtual-school.

Pulitzer Prize winner to read at Carter Center

Pulitzer Prize winner to read at Carter Center

ATLANTA -- Writer Anna Quindlen will read from her seventh novel, Still Life with Bread Crumbs, at the Carter Center next month.

Quindlen is a former New York Times columnist who won a Pulitzer Prize for her work. She left the paper in 1995 to become a novelist. One of her books, One True Thing, was made into a major motion picture starring Meryl Streep and Renée Zellweger.

She will read from Still Life with Bread Crumbs on Thursday, Mar. 13 at 7 p.m.

The novel "begins with an imagined gunshot and ends with a new tin roof," according to A Cappella Books, which is sponsoring Quindlen's visit to Atlanta:
