Atlanta's ‘BEST WORLD MUSIC ACT’ Salutes Men on Father's Day

Atlanta's ‘BEST WORLD MUSIC ACT’ Salutes Men on Father's Day

ATLANTA -- You have seen them on NBC television network reality series “America’s Got Talent” and if you are a reality-show junkie, you remember them sharing  their high-energy dance experience with singer/songwriter Kandi Burruss and Attorney Phaedra Parks in connection with their travels to South Africa on BRAVO cable network top-rated reality series “Real Housewives of Atlanta”.

Now, the 19-year Atlanta-based ensemble GIWAYEN MATA, is going  to bring their ‘contagious’ high energy drum and dance to the Southwest Arts Center for Father's Day. Between educating audiences about African traditions and breaking barriers as an all-sistah ensemble in a male dominated percussion industry, its no wonder Creative Loafing Magazine named them "Best Local World Music Act" three times!

Chick-fil-A to host mother-son 'Date Knight'

Chick-fil-A to host mother-son 'Date Knight'

ATLANTA -- All of the Chick-fil-A restaurants in metro Atlanta will host a special mother-son Date Knight on Saturday, Apr. 28.

The Date Knight format will be similar to that of the franchise's massively popular Daddy-Daughter Date Nights. It will give mothers and sons a special chance to enjoy some quality time together.

The event will have a medieval theme, hence the "Knight" part of its title.

"One of Chick-fil-A's goals is to promote community connections and enrich the lives of everyone we come in contact with," Robin Lomax, Chick-fil-A area marketing director, said in a statement. "We understand the importance of mother-son relationships and want to encourage local moms to come to Chick-fil-A, enjoy their sons' company over a meal and have fun."

ATLANTA -- In a meeting that lasted more than 12 hours and had more than 500 attendees, some chanting and carrying signs, the Atlanta school board approved a controversial redistricting plan late Tuesday night.

The board unanimously approved the plan advanced by Superintendent Erroll Davis with three amendments: to keep Towns, D.H. Stanton and F.L. Stanton elementary schools open.

Outbursts from the audience stopped the meeting twice. At one point, while the superintendent was absent, someone from the crowd yelled that Davis needed to return before they continued. The crowd began chanting "We want Davis." In a separate incident, a man who reportedly caused a commotion was escorted out by Atlanta police officers.

24-hour facility offers life skills training and educational help to assist homeless mothers in gaining and maintaining stable employment

The Fulton County Board of Commissioners, County Manager Zachary Williams and Fulton County Housing and Human Services Department staff officially opened the Springdale Place Comprehensive Services Center for Homeless Women with Children on February 28, 2012.

Springdale Place does not fit the traditional description of a homeless shelter.  The County is working with other community partners to provide education and life skills programs to help homeless mothers to reach housing stability and self-sufficiency.
