Feds investigating 4 Atlanta hospitals

ATLANTA -- Several Atlanta hospitals owned by Tenet Healthcare Corp. are being investigated by federal officials over potential kickback violations.

In filings with the Securities and Exchange Commission, Dallas-based Tenet says it has received a subpoena from the Office of the Inspector General of the U.S. Department of Health and Human Services seeking documents from January 2004 to May 2012 related to the relationship that Atlanta Medical Center, North Fulton Regional Hospital, South Fulton Medical Center (now known as Atlanta Medical Center - South Campus) and Spalding Regional Hospital and Hilton Head (S.C.) Hospital had with an unaffiliated company called Hispanic Medical Management Inc.

Interfaith Coalition of Fulton holds summit

COLLEGE PARK, Ga. -- The Fulton County faith community is invited to join Fulton County Health and Human Services to discuss chronic disease issues in a joint effort to define opportunities to address health issues and identify policies and practices that can effectively decrease the impact of chronic diseases in our communities. Fulton County Health and Human Services answers call to action to reduce health disparities

ATLANTA -- April is National Minority Health Month. This year’s theme, “Health Equity Can’t Wait: Act Now in Your CommUNITY!”, is a call to action and unity for the nation to get involved and invested in reducing health disparities. Since 2009, Fulton County Health and Human Services has been providing integrated services to residents in an effort to address health disparities and assist them with living healthier lifestyles.

“Fulton County continues to address health disparities that affect some of our communities more than others,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services. “Everyone has a stake in community health; we have to work together to find solutions.”

FULTON COUNTY -- April 1 – 7, 2013 is National Public Health Week (NPHW). The Fulton County Health Services teams remind residents that the Fulton County Department of Health and Wellness is dedicated to promoting, protecting and assuring the health and wellness of the people of Fulton County. During NPHW, residents are encouraged to join the effort to keep Fulton County healthy.

Since 1995, the American Public Health Association (APHA) has served as lead organizer for National Public Health Week. During the first full week of April each year, communities across the United States have observed NPHW as a time to recognize the contributions of public health and highlight issues that are important to improving the public’s health.

2013 Georgia Rides to the Capitol to raise cycling support

ATLANTA -- The 2013 "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event will be held through the city on Tuesday, March 26.

A spokeswoman for the ride said more than 1,000 cyclists are expected to participate, as part of the Metro Atlanta Mayors Association "GEORGIA BIKES!" program. The bike ride will be escorted by police, and run track through Decatur and Roswell. Leading the pack will be Commissioner Fred Boykin and Mayor Jere Wood, along with more city officials.

During the "Georgia Rides to the Capitol" event, cyclists hope to raise support for other types of transportation through the metro region. Plus, they hope conditions will improve to allow easier cycling, including the development of regional systems and both on-road bicycling facilities and multi-use trails.

Fulton County maintains ranking in health study

FULTON COUNTY, Ga. -- The newly released 2013 County Health Rankings for Georgia confirm the critical role that factors such as education, jobs, income, environment and access to health care play in how healthy people are and how long they live. Once again, the Rankings place Fulton County in the top quarter of Georgia counties on health outcomes and health factors according to the report released by the University of Wisconsin and the Robert Wood Johnson Foundation Project.

“We know that much of what influences our health happens outside of the doctor’s office – in our schools, workplaces and neighborhoods,” states Patrice A. Harris, MD, Director of Fulton County Health Services. “We have to keep looking at the multiple factors that contribute to good health and ensure that our communities are positioned to address those factors.”
