Body found in a trash can in NE Atlanta identified

ATLANTA (WXIA) -- Authorities have identified a body found in a trash can in northeast Atlanta.

Officers responding to a "person down" call discovered the body of 41-year-old Tyna Marlena Bass, of Atlanta, late Monday. Her cause of death has not been released.

Police received the call at about 5:15 p.m. near the corner of Highland Avenue and Howell Street. When officers arrived they found what appears to be a body wrapped inside a blanket, and placed inside a trash can.

A man walking his dog made the shocking discovery.

"I thought maybe it was abandoned, and I'll just take it back. So I opened it up to see if it had trash in it and I saw what it was," he said, requesting that we do not release his name.

He lives nearby and often walks through the area just off Highland Avenue near the Freedom Barkway Dog Park.

"From the sidewalks you could see the tracks where someone had drug the trash can through the tall grass, and that's the trail I followed over there to see it.. I know it was not there at 11 o'clock this morning," he said.

The man called 911 as soon as he saw the body.
